Post 8 came into last night's baseball game with an opportunity to win the 3A Regional tournament. The only thing standing in their way was a determined Spearfish team who worked their way back through the double elimination portion of the regional bracket. Post 8 has not beaten Spearfish yet this season and that didn't change last night. Spearfish used a 14 run second inning to take an early 15-0 lead after two innings of play which proved to be the difference.
Post 8 used six different relief pitchers throughout the game. Most of the relief players had hardly pitched on the season. Austin Wagner had the best outing going three and two thirds. Coming into last night's game the pitching staff for Post 8 was extremely thin and it was noticeable throughout the seven innings of play according to Post 8 coach Matt Sisk.
Though the pitching was skeptical at times, the Post 8 bats had a huge surge. With the score 15-0 in the top of the third, Post 8 plated five runs three of which were driven in by a three run homer by Austin Wagner.Post 8 scratched and clawed for eight more runs throughout the game but Spearfish also had a great night offensively. Even though Post 8 suffered defeat, Coach Sisk was pleased with the way his team swung the bats.
Spearfish won the game 23-13 in 7 innings. Post 8 and Spearfish will battle again this evening at Hyde Stadium. This time around it will determine who the Region 3A champion will be. Both teams have already locked up a spot at the state tournament next week in Rapid City. You can listen to coverage of tonight's game on 1240AM Today's KCCR and todayskccr.com starting 5:40PM.
