Sunday, June 23, 2013
In the later game of a Blue Sox/Gray Sox double header against Mitchell at Kelley Field, the Gray Sox came away with a thrilling win.
Mitchell started the game with a walk and a single, both runners would advance a base. Mitchell's three hitter hit a single up the gut to score the runner from third, but Center Fielder Peyton Zabel gunned down the runner trying to score from second. Mitchell scored a second run in the top of the first. Pierre responded in the bottom of the bottom half of the inning. Pierre's first batters recorded outs but the heart of the order came up big as Kade MgTighe, Zabel, Parker Pietz, and Alex Badger all singled. Mctighe and Zabel both scored in the inning.
Neither team scored again the 5th inning. Matt Rounds led off the inning with a big double down the left field line. Austin Senger walked, followed by a single from Carson Tschetter, and an RBI single from McTighe. Senger scored on a sacrifice fly by Zabel. Pierre's lead was 4-2 after 5 innings.
Mitchell rallied to score 3 runs and took the lead. But that wouldn't last for long. Austin Senger was hit by a pitch and came around to even the score.
Zabel came into the game in relief of Tschetter who worked 6 good innings. Zabel pitched a scoreless top of the 7th. Thats when the heroics started. Nick Woods led off with a sharply hit double. Senger and Tschetter both reached base. With the bases loaded, McTighe came up to the plate and laced a single up the gut to give the Gray Sox the walk-off win.
After the split with Spearfish earlier in the week and this win over Mitchell, the Gray Sox improved their record to 8-4. The Gray Sox will return to action on Thursday the 27th, when they travel out West for a double header with Sturgis.
